Arnold Nieuwendam (1946), a professional artist (Arnaldo), volunteers as a numismatist and is considered an expert in the field of medals, especially the contemporary trends.

This artistic form entered his life after he got acquainted, in 1976, with sculptress and medal-maker Carla Klein, later to become his wife. In the course of years he organized many exhibitions of her work and on her fiftieth birthday he issued a complete catalogue of all her medals - so far.  In 1991 he was nomimated for the membership of the Koninklijk Nederlands Genootschap voor munt- en penningkunde and in 1993 he became a member of the Numismatische Kring Amsterdam. His wife is member of Vereniging voor Penningkunst, PVDM and the BAMS. In the very same year 1993 Nieuwendam intensified his passion for the world of medals and began to compile archives focused on medal-making in the Netherlands. By now he has collected numerous books, photographs, clippings, letters, indeed medals and colour-slides.

Over the years he has published some 175 articles on the art of medal-making, in reputed magazines, such as De MUNTkoerier, De Beeldenaar, THE MEDAL, La Numismatica, Geldgeschichtliche Nachrichten and others. He composed eight catalogues: for Carla Klein, in 1993, for the Numismatische Kring Amsterdam, in 1994, for Eefke Cornelissen, in 1995, and one for Galerie Imago. Number five, on the medals by Ianchelevici, came into being in 1999. In 2000 for GALERIE IMAGO, Embleem van de natuur. In order to stimulate today's medal-making he organized, without any financial interest, the exhibition 'Eighteen female medallists' (1995) for GALERIE IMAGO and undertook to make both the announcement/invitation and the catalogue. The next year he masterminded 'Twelve medallists' for Galerie Couzis and 1997 saw him back again in Galerie Imago with the exhibition 'Medal and Sculpture', for which he designed a catchy poster. In 2004 organized Nieuwendam 'The Medal as intimate artwork' in Surhuisterveen. Number seven together with Willy Faes about the medals from Carla Klein 60 year. Number eight about Ad Merx in 2006. He also composed study-portfolios, a.o. for Studio Niklé, Galerie Couzis, Galerie Imago, Museum Beelden aan Zee and Geld- Bank Museum. After january 2003 is Nieuwendam unpaid webmaster from a medal page: http://penningkunst.startpagina.nl  With medallinks from all over the world. Afther juli 2004 is Nieuwendam webmaster from the medal promotion page http://www.penningpromotie.nl  The Dutch virtual medalgallery, where medallistst sales there medals.

There can be no doubt: As a (unpaid) volunteer, Arnold Nieuwendam has exerted himself considerably, over a large number of years, to revive the culture of Dutch medal-making, by composing catalogues, taking photographs, by organizing (group-) exhibitions, writing articles, making colour-slide series and lecturing on his favourite medals.
